Get ready for the knowledge showdown! Advance on the board by answering questions, overcoming challenges, and mastering everything about soil classification and geotechnical characterization tests. It's competition, learning, and fun all in one move!
Content covered: soil classification (USCS, AASHTO), index properties, specific weight, plasticity, grain size distribution, and basic concepts of geotechnical characterization tests.
Target audience: undergraduate Civil Engineering students, especially those enrolled in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Laboratory courses.
Number of players: 2 to 4 participants.
Average playtime: 20 to 40 minutes
Game type: board game with question cards and a progression system based on correct answers.
Objective: advance on the board by correctly answering technical questions about geotechnical soil characterization and win the race for knowledge.
Format: physical print-and-play game, including board, cards, and instructions available in PDF format.
How to use it: The game can be used as a review tool or as part of playful assessment activities. It works well in classrooms, teaching labs, or academic integration events. It is designed for small groups, promoting interaction, content reinforcement, and strategic thinking.
What do you need? Only the PDF files available on this page are needed. There's no need for a glossary, answer key, or additional materials — the correct answers are already indicated on the cards themselves, allowing students to play independently with minimal supervision. We recommend printing the board in A3 size for better visibility. The rules fit on a single A4 sheet. The cards should be printed on A4 paper, front side only.
By playing Soil Characterstudents develop cognitive skills related to the retention and understanding of fundamental concepts in geotechnical characterization and soil classification. The main learning objectives are:
The game was supervised by Dr Bruna Lopes and Dr Mariana Chrusciak. All content and design were developed by Hingred Karoline Magalhães da Luz, based on core topics from the Soil Mechanics course.
Before being finalized, the game was tested in a focus group with students (Ethics Process No. 50353521.0.0000.5302 – 2021 – UFRR), and the feedback collected was incorporated into the final version to ensure clarity, applicability, and engagement.
