Consolidate

Watch out for the Leaning Towers! In this game, you learn about soil consolidation while facing questions and twists that can lead you to victory... or make you sink! A light and fun way to review a dense topic!

About the Game

Content covered: fundamental concepts of soil consolidation, settlement, consolidation curve, and interpretation of unidimensional consolidation tests.

Target audience: undergraduate Civil Engineering students, especially those in Soil Mechanics courses.

Number of players: 2 to 4 participants.

Average playtime: 30 to 40 minutes.

Game type: board game with question cards and a progression system based on correct answers.

Objective: advance on the board by correctly answering questions about consolidation and overcoming the obstacles set by the board.

Format: physical print-and-play game, with simple instructions and colorful PDF cards.

How to use it: ideal for reviewing the main topics of soil consolidation in a light and engaging way. It can be used during theoretical review sessions, exam preparation, pre-lab refreshers, or as an active learning tool in group settings. The game stimulates technical reasoning, reinforces key concepts, and promotes collaborative learning.

What do you need? Only the PDF files available on this page are needed. Simply print the cards on A4 sheets (double-sided) and cut them as indicated. All necessary content is included on the cards themselves — no glossary, answer key, or extra materials required. Students can use the game independently, with minimal supervision. We recommend printing the board in A3 size for better visibility. The rules fit on a single A4 sheet.

Learning Objectives

During the game, students develop the following cognitive skills based on the revised Bloom's Taxonomy:

  • Recognize technical terms such as settlement, primary consolidation, time factor (Tv), and coefficient of consolidation (Cv).
  • Identify formulas, parameters, and basic relationships used in consolidation tests.
  • Interpret technical data presented on the cards.
  • Relate the questions to concepts discussed in class and justify their choices based on fundamental geotechnical reasoning.
  • Differentiate between concepts such as immediate, primary, and secondary settlement at an introductory level.
Who’s Behind This Game?

All aspects of this game were developed by Dr Bruna Lopes. It served as the starting point for the creation of the GeoFUN project. Dr Mariana Chrusciak contributed to the content review, helping to enhance the technical and educational clarity of the material.

Before the final version, the game was tested with a focus group of students (Ethics Protocol No. 50353521.0.0000.5302 – 2021 – UFRR). Their feedback was used to improve the clarity of the questions, the board game dynamics, and the educational effectiveness of the material.
